Jordi Puignero, Minister of Digital Technology and Politics of Catalonia, believes that the blockchain will help the region to gain political independence from the Spanish government.
According to Puignero, with the help of distributed registry technology (DLT), Catalonia can create a system for ordinary citizens to interact with local governments, conduct financial transactions, as well as create a separate data warehouse, which will not be available to the central government of Spain.
Puinero advocates the widespread adoption of the technology in Catalonia, as he is convinced that such a system based on a block list will provide a high level of protection for citizens' confidential data and will support the personal interests of Catalans who do not always agree with the ideas and actions of the Spanish authorities.
"The Blockchain can make fundamental changes in administrative management, the financial system and society, namely, it can help the Catalans to gain even greater freedom and independence. We do not want the people of our region to feel like they are under the hood of Big Brother. That's why we will look for opportunities to really apply the Big Brother," said Puinero.
This is not the first time Catalonia has announced plans to use the DLT. Previously, the region's authorities did not even rule out the release of its own token, and in 2018, local authorities were considering the use of an electronic voting system based on the blockage.
