Coinbase, the American cryptographic exchange, is testing Clearview AI face recognition technology to improve security.
Clearview AI's artificial intelligence "searches" sites and social platforms for data and images, but the collection of such information takes place without user consent. Earlier, Clearview said the technology was originally intended for law enforcement agencies in the United States and Canada. Clearview AI is already used by more than 2,200 companies and financial institutions around the world. This may include the Coinbase exchange.
Exchange management explained that Clearview AI software has been tested to improve the security of the site and ensure compliance with legal requirements. At the same time, the exchange specified that it did not use client data when testing the technology.
Coinbase said it is testing Clearview AI to see how the service can improve measures to protect Exchange employees and offices from physical threats, as well as to investigate fraud. To date, Coinbase has only been testing the product and is not using it in its operations.
In February 2018, the exchange Coinbase was criticized for its intention to provide the U.S. Internal Revenue Service with detailed information about the cryptographic operations of 13 thousand customers.
