Everledger and Circulor will develop a platform for tracking cobalt and lithium supplies.

UK startup Everledger and Circulor will develop a cobalt and lithium supply chain tracking platform with Circulor, which will develop a platform based on the Hyperledger Fabric bloc to track the cobalt and lithium supply chain.

Everledger specializes in using the blockchain to combat counterfeiting of gemstones, particularly diamonds. The company's management said it intends to expand its business by using the blockchain to monitor the supply of rare minerals used to manufacture batteries.

The renowned car maker Mercedes Benz is already using Circulor technology to track the cobalt supply chain as well as carbon emissions. Circulor and Everledger have a similar concept - they use a blockbuster to monitor social and environmental compliance during mining. So the startups decided to develop a joint product.

Everledger co-founder Leanne Kemp and Circulor CEO Doug Johnson-Poensgen said their solution will work for Hyperledger Fabric. The possibility of interaction with IBM is also under discussion.

Ponsen added that the platform will be used not only for tracking cobalt production in the Democratic Republic of Congo, but also in different regions of the world. For example, lithium mining in the Atakama desert leads to water pollution, so the decision on the blockade is aimed at preventing environmental disasters.

In December, the Russian diamond miner ALROSA started working with the startup Everledger, which launched a pilot project to track polished diamonds at the siege.
