In Malaysia, a blockchain will be introduced to track palm oil supplies

The Malaysian Palm Oil Council (MPOC) and the BloomBloc block-start-up company have developed a platform for tracking the palm oil supply chain.

The application has already been tested and is in the pilot program phase - it is being used by local palm oil producers and processors, plantations and small family farms. Each tree and related information is registered in the system, which allows tracking the product's path from the tree to the processor and the consumer.

The development of the Blockchain platform has resulted from the introduction of Malaysia's mandatory MSPO (Clean Palm Oil) certification standard in the country. General Director of MPOC Kalyana Sundram stressed:

"It says a lot about our credibility in the supply chain. And it is another way to show the world that Malaysia values people and our planet. We hope that by creating this platform and showing the benefits of the Blockchain, we will encourage other agricultural industries to follow our example".

The problem of illegal palm oil production in Malaysia is quite acute. In pursuit of profit, palm oil companies destroy forests and leave only logs behind. In 2019, for example, 730 hectares of forest was destroyed by Radiant Lagoon. Malaysian authorities are constantly tightening control over the industry.

Recently, Ecuadorian dairy producer El Ordeño announced the implementation of a block system to track the supply chain of products as part of a pilot program IBM Food Trust.
