St. Petersburg police have identified an illegal mining farm.

Police in St. Petersburg detected the illegal connection to the electricity grid in order to steal electricity for mining. The persons involved in the scheme have already been identified.

The miners have placed their equipment in an abandoned building of a former poultry farm in the village of Leskovo, located in the Leningrad region, as well as in the premises of a recreation center in the village of Roshchino. Several locations with mining equipment were also identified in the residential premises.

"Employees of the Main Department of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Russia for St. Petersburg and Leningrad Region have identified persons who may be involved in illegal profit making by unauthorized connection to power grids for the purpose of cryptographic currency mining. Attackers used modified electric meters programmed to underestimate power consumption," said in an official statement of the Russian Interior Ministry.

Law enforcement agencies report that more than 20 searches were conducted, during which more than 2 million rubles were seized, as well as more than 100 modified electric meters, means for sealing the meters and the seals themselves, as well as devices for opening and modifying the meters. In order to provide the evidence base, the attackers' phones were also seized and their correspondence was preserved.

It was recently reported that Russian mining companies remain profitable due to the fall of the ruble.
