The European Commission announced a tender to develop solutions for the defence industry. Companies may also submit bids based on a block list.
The European Commission has launched a tender European Defense Industrial Development Programme (EDIDP). The list of possible proposals for participation in the tender includes 42 items. The European Commission encourages small and medium-sized enterprises to offer solutions that encourage innovation and the adaptation of technologies for civil and defence purposes.
Among other things, under the programme, it is possible to submit proposals related to "cloud-based infrastructure and local virtual copy, which uses the capabilities of a blockbuster".
A virtual copy is a digital duplicate of a physical object, system or process. Having a virtual copy in a blocchanger allows companies to store information about their products and check the place of production or records of previous ownership, confirming the legitimacy of the product.
The main purpose of such projects should be to better meet the current logistics needs of the military, such as maintenance, supply chains and consumables.
The winning proposals will receive €254 million from the budget of the European Commission for further development in the field of defence products or services. Proposals submitted are expected to include research or projects that will enable technologies to be adapted for defence purposes. This should subsequently lead to the creation of products that are low cost and cost effective for military use.
Proposals will be accepted from 15 April to 1 December 2020. However, the bidding period may be extended in the event of problems caused by the ongoing coronavirus pandemic.
This is not the first time that a blockchain has been used for defence purposes. In August last year, South Korea began to develop a block-platform for the defence industry. In addition, last summer the U.S. Department of Defense began to develop a communications platform on the blockchain.
