Vulnerability in Windows 10 threatens the security of cryptographic wallets

The latest version of the Windows Defender contains a security error that opens the way for malicious software that can compromise the operation of cryptographic wallets.

The error detected by Windows Latest consists of problems scanning Windows Latest Protector version 4.18.2003. This version of the program does not fully perform the scanning, prematurely terminating it or skipping certain files.

The problem concerns only Windows 10 and may not occur during offline scanning. It is possible that the scan is complete, but the Defender does not display information about it correctly. Microsoft has not yet solved this problem.

However, malware continues to spread. Many cryptographic investors keep their funds in desktop wallets, which can be compromised by keyboard interceptors or other malware designed to collect sensitive data.

There is also software that replaces the copied addresses of bitcoin wallets, resulting in funds being redirected to the criminal's wallet. And even experts can become victims of scammers. Thus, at the end of last year the VeChain Foundation lost more than 1.1 billion VET ($6.6 million) after installing malware on the developer's personal computer.

Due to frequent problems with Microsoft, many cryptographic investors prefer to store their funds on smartphones, which tend to have more secure operating systems. However, mobile device users also face security problems.

In December, Promon, a company specializing in information security, discovered a vulnerability that allows hackers to access personal data on any Android phone. Last June, Trend Micro discovered a botnet for cryptographic mapping that uses the Android Debug Bridge ports to fix application defects.

The same month, ESET discovered a vulnerability in the Android operating system that allowed malicious programs to access two-factor user authentication codes.
