The developers of Sodinokibi's extortion software have abandoned the Bitcoin in favor of moneros to make it difficult for law enforcement agencies to track their "partners".
"Europol officially stated that Monero cannot be tracked, — the developers wrote on a hacker forum. - By using the Tor and Monero browsers as currency, you can remain completely invisible on the network for police and government agencies. We are forcing BTC in favor of XMR so that our distributors can be more anonymous.
"After a while, the bitcoin will be completely removed. Victims must begin to understand the new cryptographic language, like other interested parties working with us", — they also write.
At the end of last year, Europol analyst Jerek Jakubcek made a presentation in which he said that if criminals use Monero, the effectiveness of investigating cases is reduced to zero.
"The suspect used the TOR and Monero browsers, so we were unable to track the movement of funds. We also couldn't trace IP addresses. In other words, we were powerless. The information in the Bitcoin Blockchain was available for analysis, so we went so far. But in the case of Monero, we reached a certain point where the investigation had to be stopped. This is a classic example of one of many cases where the suspect decided to transfer his assets from Bitcoin or ether to Monero," he said then.
