Russian diplomats sent a note to the French Foreign Ministry asking to place Alexander Vinnik under house arrest.
According to activist Maria Butina, who sent a request to the Russian embassy in France, Russian diplomats demanded from the French Foreign Ministry to provide adequate and appropriate medical care to Alexander Vinnik on March 30. In addition, the diplomats requested information about the measures taken by the French authorities to curb the spread of coronavirus in French prison Fresn, where the alleged BTC-e exchange operator is kept. No answer has been received so far.
"Not having received a reply, on 14 April they sent a note to the French Ministry of Foreign Affairs demanding that the French judicial authorities consider relocating A.B.. Vinnik was placed under house arrest and confirmed his readiness to provide an apartment owned by the Russian Federation for this purpose," said Butina Russian Ambassador to France Alexei Meshkov.
Butina is in contact with Vinnik's mother and lawyer. His health has been severely shaken over the years in various prisons and hunger strikes, so if he is infected with coronavirus, his death is likely. In case of transfer of the accused under house arrest, it will be easier to avoid infection. At the same time, the Russian Embassy is ready to provide Vinnik with a temporary apartment.
Alexander Vinnik was arrested in Greece back in 2017. And earlier this year he was extradited to France, where he was later charged with money laundering, extortion and other crimes. It was reported that after the completion of the trial Vinnik will be again transferred to Greece, and then extradited to the U.S., where he will face similar charges. And only then will the defendant be sent to Russia.
