GM and Honda create a decentralized network for charging cars

The Mobility Open Blockchain Initiative (MOBI) has launched a global standard for integrating blockchain technology into a decentralized vehicle charging network.

Storage of surplus energy generated by wind or sunlight is a big challenge for the renewable energy industry, as the batteries needed for this are very expensive. However, electric vehicles already have a significant charging capacity, so connecting them to the decentralized energy grid for storing renewable energy has become particularly important.

The first project specifications of the MOBI working group on the integration of electric vehicles into the grid aim to lay the foundation for decentralized charging networks that make better use of surplus green energy by integrating the vehicle into the grid, tokenizing carbon credits and implementing P2P applications.

"Electric cars, chargers and power producers will receive secure identification, the ability to interact with a standard message format and automatically record transactions such as charging, generation and exchange in a distributed registry," commented MOBI founder and chief operating officer Tram Bo.

The Electric Vehicle Integration Working Group was established in May, with leading automotive companies Honda and General Motors co-chairing the organization. Accenture, IBM, IOTA Foundation and RZ became authoritative members of the group dealing with distributed register technologies.

Christian Kebel, Senior Project Engineer at Honda R&D Europe, emphasized the "mass transition" that the energy sector is currently experiencing from "centralized power generation at large power plants to more distributed and unstable power generation":

"Decentralization and the concept of direct P2P interactions should be a key factor in using this new market and creating meaningful tools for energy-saving customers.

Green energy is increasingly becoming the basis for the spread of Blockchain technology - last week Ripple and Energou Web Foundation announced the Energou Web Zero protocol, created to decarbonize distributed registry networks.
